Ourselves in Rivers and Oceans -

a poetry anthology

"Why did the old Persians hold the sea holy? Why did the Greeks give it a separate deity, and make him the own brother of Jove? Surely all this is not without meaning. And still deeper the meaning of that story of Narcissus, who because he could not grasp the tormenting, mild image he saw in the fountain, plunged into it and was drowned. But that same image, we ourselves see in all rivers and oceans. It is the image of the ungraspable phantom of life; and this is the key to it all."

-From "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville

"Ourselves in Rivers and Oceans" - a poetry anthology

(Any poems received outside this time frame will not be considered. Submissions which DO NOT follow these guidelines will be instantly rejected.)

For our third anthology, The Wee Sparrow Poetry Press team have selected the theme of WATER. We have chosen the title "Ourselves in Rivers and Oceans", inspired by the lines from Melville´s "Moby Dick", but the subject matter of your poems does not need to focus only on rivers and oceans.

Water is everywhere. Water is energy. Water is life.

Water is endangered.

All royalties will be donated to the charity water.org/

Please read these carefully before submitting.

Poets are invited to submit a maximum of THREE poems in English as a single Word doc or pdf attachment single spaced in Times New Roman 12 via email to theweesparrowpoetrypress@gmail.com. Please start each poem on a new page. Make the file name of your document only your first and surname as you want it to appear in print.

If you would prefer to submit poems with a different form (design, font etc.) then that´s ok, but please send them as a pdf only to retain your original layout.

Poems can be ANY FORM AND LENGTH, previously published or not

(this includes on social media, blogs and personal websites), but do send us some of your new writing too.

Simultaneous submissions are fine but please do let us know if your poem is accepted elsewhere prior to us publishing the water anthology. In this instance, if your poem is also accepted by The Wee Sparrow Poetry Press editing team, we will need to add a ´Previously published in...´ note.

If any poems have been previously published, please include this at the end of the poem in the Word doc/pdf (Previously published in "..." by The...Press, Date)

In subject write "Water Anthology Submission" and write only your country of residence in the body of the email. Do not include a bio.

The accepted poets will be contacted via email once the editing team, Claire, John, Marc and Sarah, have made their selection.

This collection will be proofread by Katherine E Winnick, who is one of the editors of our haiku anthology, "To Live Here".

You can read about how we publish here The Wee Sparrow Poetry Press - Publishing with The Wee Sparrow so bear this in mind before submitting.

There is no submission fee as we do not believe in asking poets to pay to submit their words. If you would like to support the work we do at The Wee Sparrow Poetry Press, you can make a voluntary donation here.
